Our NEW Video on installed floors!
Ranch Harvested: Your floor will be cut from trees salvaged
from the Viveash Fire of 2000. We own the Viveash Ranch and lost
over 1500 acres of timber. Your purchase helps extend the life of
one of New Mexico's oldest family ranches. We are a certified Tree
Farm and are committed to long term management of our land for the
health of the woods, wildlife and our fellow man.
Sawn Right: We are students of the art of sawing. We
carefully stress-relieve our cants for 'relaxed boards' which
eliminates bad surprises. All our flooring is cut "For the Quarter".
True quarter sawn is between 80-90 degrees of vertical grain. Rift
Sawn is from 45-80 degrees. Flat or Tangentially Sawn is from 1-45
degrees. We always try and get as much vertical grain as possible,
although our standard 'Old Wood Select' grade includes about an even
mix of grains and cuts. Careful installation should allow you to
have vertical grain in high traffic areas and attractive character
and flat sawn boards in less used areas.
Kiln Dried: Our homemade but modern, scrap-wood fired kiln
also uses moisture evacuation and incandescents to slowly dry our
boards without case hardening as in many 'high tech' kilns. At the
same time we achieve a temperature of between 140-160 degrees which
causes most sap to evaporate and crystalize.
Modern Machining: We machine our flooring and mouldings
using a 1999 Wienig Profimat P-23; the state of the art in five head
moulders. Digiset technology allows us to repeat exact easurements
over and over- key to a precise fit. This most expensive of moulders
makes fine floor boards. Our profile is European ISO 9000 standard
including a nailing flange for modern floor nailers and large
semi-round stress relieving back outs to prevent warping. All boards
are a full ¾ inch or thicker on special request. ½ inch boards also
available as of 06/02.
Hand Made All The Way: Your floor board is handled at
least nine times. We begin by selecting the right log. We avoid
crook, sweep, twist, wind shake and other defects. Once cut, we
check each board and reject defects such as sap pockets, split and
check, etc.. The characteristic pink color of Doug Fir heartwood is
what we seek. Better grades of tightly-grained, whiter boards are
used, but only the good ones.
Grade, Sizes & Prices: Please allow us to quote larger
orders and to competitively bid against other offers. Our grades are
'in house' as standard wood grades are inapplicable to knotty
flooring. We hand pick every board. Some defect may need to be
removed from Select grade but very little if any from Clear Vertical
Grain (CVG) grade.
Mountain
High Grade: (MHG) Character knots of an excellent
grade. Yes, we grade knots! Hand selected to be durable and
attractive. We don't expect you to use any but the ones you would
choose for yourself.
"Two point Five" A strip floor, 2 ¼ inches face width, sawn from
smaller trees which are often overgrown on our north slopes. A dense
tight grain and mostly quarter sawn make this an excellent board. A
classic and very elegant look. Available with advance notice and in
other custom widths as well.
Four Inch Planks: Our four inch plank floor contains a high
percentage of Quarter Sawn. 3 ¼" face width. It costs a bit less
than the wider planks, but I personally think it makes a great
looking floor.
Six inch planks: An Old Classic wide plank. Quarter, rift and
flat sawn in nearly even proportions. This is our stock-in-trade
board. 5 ¼ face width. A wide plank floor with class and character.
Eight inch wide plank: These come from
larger trees. We go through lots more wood to get the good eight
inch boards. Not many will produce the quality we demand. Any warp,
sweep or crook defects make the machining process harder. Due to
selection and machining problems with wider boards, we get lots more
rejects. The price is a bit higher due to this, but for the person
who wants an exclusive wide look with the highest standard of
character and finish, this is it. 7 ¼" face.
Clear Vertical Grain, CVG:
Found in fine old homes from
coast to coast. This floor is in high demand for repairs and new
construction. We can easily match widths, thickness and tongue
heights on a custom basis. Nearly all quarter sawn or rift sawn.
Very few small tight knots. Random lengths from 12" to 10' with high
volume in longer lengths.
